Storia di un gesto. Il mito di Meleagro dall’arte classica a Warburg, a Picasso
13 May – 4 October 2026
Curated by Salvatore Settis, History of a Gesture. The Myth of Meleager from Classical Art to Warburg and Picassobegins with the exceptional public display of a second-century AD Roman sarcophagus depicting the Death of Meleager, from the Brenta-Torno Collection.
Through artworks, images and documents, the exhibition reconstructs the history of the so-called “gesture of despair”, one of the most powerful visual formulas for expressing grief in the Western artistic tradition. From the ancient world to Giotto, from the reflections of Aby Warburg to Pablo Picasso’s Guernica, the exhibition traces the survival and transformation of an image that has endured across the centuries.
